Barrel Size
Hair curlers come in a variety of sizes and each one will help you achieve a different type of curl. When it comes to the width of a curling barrel, hair length will be a big factor to consider. If you have shorter hair lengths, such as a bob-style haircut, larger barrels will create more a voluminous hairstyle rather that defined curls due to the number of times the hair can be wrapped around the barrel. Additionally, if you have very fine hair sometimes larger curls can drop quite easily, so whilst using a smaller hair curler will create more defined curls to begin with, you can easily brush through them to create a softer finish. If you have very long hair, it is also important to consider the length of the barrel to ensure shorter styling time.
Tapered Curling Wand
A tapered curling wand has a wide base, which then gets narrower towards the top (or tapers off). Create large, voluminous curls using the base of the wand or tighter, defined curls by using just the top half of the wand.

When using a curling tong with a clamp, it is best to start curling from the end rolling up, this is great for defining curls from the mid-shaft down.
